omg!!! a coma!
i think 60 to 90 is normal.
That is high.
Normal Blood Glucose Level (BGL) is 60-250.
Below 60 is Hypoglycemic.
Aboce 250 is Hyperglycemic.
These are based on EMS (Emergency Medical Services) standards.
Your brother is experiencing high blood sugar roughly four times the normal fasting range. The doctors are probably referring to reducing the risk of a coma by carefully measuring his insulin levels so he maintains a normal blood sugar range.
uhm that is WAY too high.
normal blood sugar levels are supposed to be 100 to 140.
its very possible he could slip into a coma.
80 to 100 is pretty good. 90 is prolly perfect. For a diabetic 90 to 120 is good. 400 is high, but generally you have to be much higher for a comma. I was 600 and still not comotose. Any higher than 600 watch out though. You can become comotose quickly.
80-120 is normal….he is diabetic..and was close to going into a diabetic coma. I think anything over 500, can result in coma or death.
about 95
I’m sorry to hear about that but what the heck happened?
How did he got to this level of blood sugar??
Anyway, the normal blood sugar level is, as said before, 60 to 90 and even 100.
All the best for him.
70-100 is a healthy normal blood sugar. 400 is way too high and can send you into a coma.
The blood sugar fluctuates especially before and after a meal. You would want it in the 120 to 140 range. Diabetics have to monitor this constantly or severe health problems result, i.e. blindness, coma, loss of limbs, and death. Also, too low of a blood sugar causes problems. For example a blood sugar level of 18 could cause dizziness, lethargy, unconsciousness and/ or death and is a medical emergency. Diabetes can be controlled with exercise, diet, and medicine, and of course, regular doctor consultations.
A fasting glucose level should be no higher than 110 in a non diabetic person. A random glucose level over 200 indicates diabetes. One needs insulin to metabolize sugar. If ones pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin unused glucose backs up in the bloodstream because it can’t get into the cells. Even though there’s plenty available your body can’t use it. When that happens a person goes into a diabetic coma, if untreated they can most certainly die. Your brother is lucky they caught it it time.
Most likely your brother had developed type 1 diabetes and will be on insulin for the rest of his life.
Fasting Blood Sugar Test:
Measures the blood sugar level after 8 hours fast or overnight. Normal fasting blood glucose level is less than 100mg/dl. If your fasting blood glucose level is from 100mg/dl to 125mg/dl then you will have impaired blood glucose level also known as Pre-Diabetes. If your blood glucose level is above 125mg/dl then your doctor will diagnose as a patient of diabetes. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may repeat the fasting blood glucose test on any other day. If you have blood glucose level of 126mg/dl or higher in two consecutive tests, then you may have diabetes. If you have blood glucose level greater than 200mg/dl and you have symptoms of diabetes like increased thirst or hunger, frequent urination, weight loss, blurred vision etc, then you may be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus without confirming it with second test.
Random Blood Glucose Test:
Random blood Glucose test gives your blood sugar at any time in a day. Normal random blood sugar level should be less than 200mg/dl. If your random blood glucose level is between 140mg/dl to 200mg/dl then you will have pre-diabetes.
Sugar level is very high. Yes close to a coma. My mom would have a coma at around 600.
What Is Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)?
When the body doesn’t have enough insulin, glucose stays in the blood and can’t get into the body’s cells to be used for energy. This can happen, for example, when a person skips doses of insulin, or when the need for insulin suddenly increases (like when a person is sick with the flu) and the doses are not adjusted. When the body can’t use glucose for fuel, it starts to use fat. When this happens, chemicals called ketones are released into the blood. Some of these ketones, like extra glucose, pass out of the body through the urine.
High levels of ketones in the blood can be a problem because they cause the blood to become acidic. Too much acid in the blood throws off the body’s chemical balance and causes the symptoms listed below. In people with diabetes, this problem is called diabetic ketoacidosis (pronounced: kee-toe-as-ih-doe-siss), or DKA. DKA is a very serious condition that can lead to coma or death if it’s not treated. The good news, though, is that it’s preventable and can be treated so very few teens actually die from it.
DKA occurs more often in people with type 1 diabetes, but can sometimes also happen to people with type 2 diabetes.
Signs and Symptoms of DKA
The symptoms of DKA usually don’t develop all at once — they usually come on slowly over several hours. People who have DKA may:
•feel really tired
•feel really thirsty or pee way more than usual
•have a dry mouth and signs of dehydration
The symptoms above are caused by the high blood sugar levels that usually occur before a person develops DKA. If the person doesn’t get treatment, the following symptoms of DKA can occur:
•abdominal pain
•nausea and/or vomiting
•fruity breath odor
•rapid, deep breathing
•confusion
•unconsciousness (“diabetic coma
Hi, well this is all American stuff here with your measurements
The normal blood sugar for healthy person should be between 4 and 8 mmol in your American measure that should be between 75 and 150 mg/dl
See here for more info: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/diabetes/faq/part1/section-9.html
My lowest was 20, highest 620 both times close to coma …..
Hope that help
Before meals, from 80 to 90 is a healthy normal blood sugar range.
Your brother obviously has diabetes. 400 is VERY high.
If the insulin doesn’t bring his blood sugar down he could go into a coma. However, he IS in the hospital and is getting the correct treatment and they will get it down, so don’t worry too much. It IS seroius, but they are treating it.
When they get it under control he’ll have to be educated about how to control his diabetes properly, and it would be helpful if you could learn more about it yourself.
Why not get the book Diabetes for Dummies and read it? You’ll know more and be able to help your brother or at least know what you should not do. If he has type 1 there is a special edition of this book just for type 1. If its type 2, then the regular edition is all you need.
