My daughter (age 3, type 1) went under general anesthesia on Friday. They gave her a steroid shot for nausea … she was fine at first, but a few hours later on the way home her blood sugar started to climb. I finally have it under control, but I had to suddenly give her whopping doses of insulin … she’s needed increased dosages before, but never anything like this. And I hate having to give her that much.

How long until the steroid wears off and she goes back to normal? Will her insulin needs go back to normal or will she stay like this?
That’s not even the half of it. I knew they were going to give her something for nausea, but they didn’t tell me until after that it was a steroid. Right after I heard that, I asked to speak to the anesthesiologist, she smiled condescendingly and said, “Oh, I only gave her a little.” And then she pointed out that her sugars hadn’t gone up, so no harm done. But then they went up not long after we left.

She’s under control now, but for that first 24 hours her blood sugars were constantly high. And now she’s having problems because of those highs. She’s got a painful infection where they worked on her.
