The more we see the onslaught of modern diseases as a result of our poor nutritional habits over the past 50 years or so, it has spawned a movement of getting back to the original diet of our early ancestors. We’ve seen a lot of paleolithic diets that hearken back to the days of the caveman, but even the diet consumed by native Americans such as the Plains Indians in the Dakotas was filled with a much healthier selection of foods than what we see in the Standard American Diet (SAD) today. That’s the basis for The Dakota Diet by Dr. Kevin Weiland.
The diet itself includes an excellent selection of high-quality food that helps to bring the omega-3/omega-6 fatty acids into the proper balance. Dr. Weiland accomplishes this by promoting healthy fat consumption that comes from grass-fed buffalo, flax seeds, fresh fish, and wild game. He claims that the lower-fat content of these good fat sources provide fewer calories in conjunction with nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, soy, whole grains, and fiber-rich foods including beans, barley, and oats.
Overall, I think the message of choosing better quality meat choices from bison and even beef is a good one. But I’m concerned with Dr. Weiland’s commentary about high-fat low-carb diets such as Atkins. As someone who lost 180 pounds on that particular plan created by the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins, I was stunned to read what he had to say about this healthy way of eating. He claims the Atkins diet is too high in saturated fat and too low in fruits, whole grains, fiber and calcium. Ummm, what’s wrong with saturated fat since science is showing it is a perfect fuel source for your body when you remove the excessive carbohydrate from your diet? As for fruits, I eat blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, cantaloupe, and honeydew all the time. Whole grains are a crock! And calcium is plentiful in the cheese and cream you consume eating low-carb.
Dr. Weiland believes that a diet high in saturated fat such as Atkins “causes your body to produce too much LDL cholesterol and reduces HDL cholesterol in the body.” With all due respect, this information is just dead wrong. When you consume a deliciously healthy high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet, your LDL may rise, but the preponderance of the LDL particles will be the large, fluffy and protective kind, not the small, dense and dangerous ones. As for HDL “good” cholesterol, it goes way up. My HDL went from the lower 20s when I weighed 410 pounds up to an incredible 72 after my 180-pound weight loss success on Atkins. This is the kind of health benefits that people who eat this way get to enjoy.
The scaremongering over diets like Atkins and Protein Power is just unnecessary Dr. Weiland. I think your diet is certainly an improvement over what is being promoted as “healthy” out there today. But rather than slam these other more successful diet plans to try to make yours look good, why not embrace the lessons we have learned from the success of the people who have been on them? This is an awful trend happening among new diet books to throw jabs in at Atkins at how bad it is supposed to be just to prop up their nutritional program. Tell us what’s good about your diet and let people decide what is best for their dietary needs.
If you want to improve your menus from your current SAD diet, then certainly The Dakota Diet can set you on a better path. But you can just about ignore all of Dr. Weiland’s unnecessary negative opinions about livin’ la vida low-carb because he is not citing all the preponderance of the evidence in support of saturated fat consumption, the concerns with carbohydrates even from so-called healthy whole grains, and the misinformation he is providing about the popular low-carb diets. It’s shameful and disgusting to make the kind of negative health claims about Atkins and other low-carb regimens that Dr. Weiland does in his book. I would only hope that future editions of this book provides just the facts about The Dakota Diet and leaves the pontificating over the diets to others.

Dr. Weiland has written a most informative and interesting book. It is well written, easily understood and packed with information on nutrition and its influence on our health. The Dakota Diet places a strong emphasis on disease prevention and fitness through a healthy diet and exercise. This is no “magic pill” diet. He recommends lifestyle changes and lays out a plan for the reader to achieve their health and fitness goals. Recipes are included which have been contributed by chefs from the Dakotas. Many include the use of game as well as whole grains and fresh produce. Game may not be easily obtained in some areas, but I have noticed the availability of ground bison in supermarkets in the northeast. The recipe from chef Jill Maguire for Buffalo Burgers produces a fantastic meal! There is information presented on a web site where the reader can order grass-fed buffalo meat.

I was privileged to be one of the participants who was chosen to undergo the Ultramind solution for six weeks prior to publication. Although it has only been 18 days since I started, the change in my energy level and my ability to concentrate is remarkable.
I have been suffering from intense fatigue and trouble concentrating for the last two years, and my physicians have been unable to find a medical diagnosis for my symptoms. Being a 46-year-old graduate student, wife, mother and employee, I have to be able to concentrate for long periods of time, especially in the evenings after work. One of my guiding principles has always been: Never read a book that has the word “ultra” in the title.
However, interesting perspectives on diet & health intrigue me, & when I saw endorsements from such respected doctors as Dean Ornish, Christiane Northrup & Mehmet Oz, I decided to break my rule and plunge into The UltraMind Solution.
I’m glad I did, for this book is an engaging read that’s full of cutting edge science & practical advice. Dr. Mark Hyman has been on a mission to do medicine & health differently since conventional medical thinking failed him in his own debilitating illness twelve years ago. He convincingly argues that maintaining the body’s health is essential for the brain’s well-being, and that many mental & psychological disorders can be rooted in physical, biochemical derangements in the body’s health & metabolism.
In part one of the book he details the background: his personal story which led to his changed philosophy & practice of medicine. He is an advocate of what is termed functional medicine, a relatively new discipline which focuses on not the established “label the disease, give it a drug” approach but “find what’s functionally wrong behind the patient’s symptoms, then correct the body’s metabolism back to optimum function.”
The second part of the book contain the outline of his “Seven Keys to UltraWellness” (argh! there’s that word again!). He covers optimizing nutrition, balancing hormones, reducing inflammation throughout the body, fixing digestive tract problems, enhancing the body’s detoxification, boosting energy metabolism, & calming the mind itself. The third part of the book covers a six week plan to initiate many of these changes, while the fourth part goes into specifics for each of his seven key areas.
Ok, so what’s the bottom line? There’s a lot of intriguing information and sound advice in the 400+ pages, & I saw nothing that I absolutely disagreed with. Like any diet or health book, he has his own viewpoint & focus, & some of his strategies & recommendations will work better for some than others. This book was a major swing factor in my own decision to try a vegan gluten free caffeine free water only lifestyle, which was difficult but very beneficial for me in multiple areas. I can see this book being useful for two groups of people: First, people who are suffering from problems such as anxiety, depression, “brain fog”, adhd, migraines or other brain related problems might find something helpful or even life-changing in his plan. Other people, like myself, who are interested in new approaches & optimum health will certainly find new concepts & tools that they can implement in their own healthy lifestyle. Either way, an excellent book to read.

I respectfully disagree with those reviewers who claim there is nothing new in this book. They must have skipped to the last chapters and simply read the dietary recommendation at the end – and even those are different in both form and function. I have read, and been on, about every diet out there — atkins, south beach, california, grapefruit – you name it. I have been on the Ultra Metabolism Phase 1 plan for 3 weeks, have lost 7 lbs – never feel hungry at all – but more importantly – I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER! I didn’t even know I felt that bad!
You must read this book from the beginning and then all the way through – taking each of the tests and determining the areas where your body is not functioning properly. I had no idea so many of my symptoms were tied to stress and cortisol release. I have a friend who had no idea she had hormone imballances but identified them and sought a functional medicine physician to correct them – and is ecstatic – and she was a vegetarian before she even read the book. I have another friend whose breast cancer physician had her read this book and go on the diet as part of her treatment! All three of us feel transformed.
I can’t recommend this book enough. I was exercising 4 days a week ,hardly eating ANYTHING, and still gaining weight, and now I know WHY and what do to about it. If you will strictly adhere to the phase 1 guidelines ( which will require shopping at your local Whole Foods or natural foods market ), I bet you will lose weight and feel great doing it too.

This is a great book. If you can put this into practice, you WILL see results. To get any great result with your weight loss, you do need to do work and this is a helpful tool in that area. It opens your eyes to ways to lift your metabolism that you may not have thought of before or known about – but now that you do, you can start to change. While it’s ultimately aiming at a ‘diet’ it’s focusing on raising your metabolism which helps you burn calories at a high rate – so not only will you loose weight from eating the right foods etc, but the weight lose will happen faster and in a more healthy way because your metabolism is now boosted and is working for you even when you are resting. Not that I have much to loose, but I’ve tried this now for one week and have noticed a big difference not only in my physical appearance but in my day to day health (with a weight loss of 8lbs already). I’m not as reliant on Coca Cola to give me my caffiene fix and I’m sleeping better at night.
This is an 8 week plan that if you put your mind to it, you can do, and it’s so worth it, because not only are you going to look better, but you are going to feel better. I do already and I’m only on week one. Give it a try. It is so worth it.

I give this book a low rating not because anything in it is bad per se, only that there is nothing all that great in it either. It is broken into three sections. The first two basically discuss their theory of disease along with anecdotes from their practice. While all of this is certainly interesting you’re probably reading this book for its practical application to your life. So a story about someone’s drug interaction and how the doctor’s diagnosed it isn’t particularly relevant unless you happen to have the same weird biochemistry that that patient had.The third section contains the practical applications of everything they’ve talked about up to this point and this is where the disappointment sets in. I have two complaints:One, in the previous two sections they mentioned numerous medical tests (e.g. checking homocystein levels or measuring metabolic performance) as being useful for diagnosing your overall health. Yet in this section there is no mention of these tests. Which ones should I ask my doctor to perform? How often should I have them performed?Two, and this is the killer, nothing they have to say is new or different. Almost the same exact advice regarding diet and exercise is contained in my 10 year old copy of a book by the guy who did Abs of Steel. If you haven’t paid *ANY* attention to health and diet literature over the past decade then what they have to say might be new to you and so the book is useful for that. But at this point you can pick up most diet and nutrition books that aren’t focused on a single fad diet and they’ll contain the same advice: exercise (both aerobic and resistance) regularly, watch out for foods with a high glycemic index, cut out sugars, caffeine, and alcohol, minimize your animal and large fish protein and fat consumption, avoid overly processed foods, eat lots of colorful vegetables high in antioxidants, get plenty of sleep, lower your stress, laugh, enjoy life.Yes, their plan will make you healthier if you can follow it. But their plan isn’t any different from what most health books have been suggesting for at least a decade and most people haven’t been following their advice.There is nothing *wrong* with this book and if you aren’t familiar with modern diet, exercise, and nutrition advice it is a fine place to start. But if you are familiar with such things you won’t find anything new in here that you can apply to your life.

My husband and I transformed our life through Ultraprevention. And we’ve completed only part of what is recommended so far. We are gradually continuing on the path because it works. As patients of doctors Liponis and Hyman, it is hard to overstate their genuine caring and desire to help their patients live as fully as possible. How terrific that everyone can try their program through this book, not just those fortunate enough to be able to go to Canyon Ranch. The most important points we’ve learned from our experience: 1) Take charge of your own health. You cannot count on today’s harrassed, malpractice-threatened, inappropriately incented doctors to do it for you. Even those with the best of intentions are hamstrung by the system. 2) The smallest steps in the right direction can bring significant rewards. The program is not overwhelming and complex when you think of it incrementally. Just take one bite at a time — it’s not an all or nothing exercise.

I love this book, as well as Dr. Hyman’s other books. I did not need or want to lose weight, I bought this book as a detox guide, as well as to find out if I have any food allergies. I did end up losing a few pounds without trying to. This is a great way to start Dr. Hyman’s UltraMetabolism plan, which is a whole foods lifelong way of eating more healthfully, not a diet. But if you want to lose weight it is an easy way of doing so, and you will not be hungry! There is one caveat to this “diet”: it is only a 7-day diet, however there is one week of preparation where you eliminate sugar, caffeine, flour, hydrogenated fats and alcohol. Dr. Hyman also strongly suggests slowly re-introducing foods after the 7-day detox, which takes several more weeks. After the 7 days though, you will probably feel so good that you will want to continue with his plan.

I lost a pound-a-day my first week and I’m now starting my (optional) second week.
Catchy title, but no hype. Written by an M.D. who has worked with hundreds of obese individuals. Straight-to-the point book. No hunger. No enemas required. Nothing complicated to buy. Sure, some stuff he recommends I never heard of, but I didn’t let my lack of knowledge stop me (after all it was my ignorance or know-it-all attitude that got me fat in the first place).
Yes, its inconvenient living in a small town to find the health products–but it’s a lot more inconvenient walking around each day with this weight on my body. I simply bought a couple of things I needed online, that’s it. Some products appear to be expensive, but the contents will last a long time, and it sure beats the price of medication my doctor wants me on if I don’t do something about my weight. And it’s cheaper than the groceries I buy for the week anyway, with a lot better nutrition. (So I did not listen to my negative voice that wants me to stay fat and depressed.)
Be sure to read some sections of the book over a second time, so that you understand exactly what the minimum it is he wants you to do and to understand your options. Don’t throw up your hands and say this is impossible. Personalize it. Change this plan in places he describes so that you cannot fail and so that you enjoy yourself and so that you can stay on the plan as long as you desire.
For example, there’s an “UltraShake” he recommends for breakfast that tasted better and better the more I played around with the additional ingredients he suggests. (So if you blow-it the first time, don’t give up, just alternate the ingredients a bit here and there and it will taste delicious.) The good news here is that this breakfast shake can be one you have the rest of your life. It’s that good.
Another example is his “UltraBroth”. He offers a couple of ready-made products as an easy substitute over making your own. So that’s what I did.
Also, there is an “enhanced plan” included in this book, but I just did the basic method – it’s plenty fast for me. I tried only the basic method because I did not want to be too overwhelmed. I might do parts of the “enhanced” method another time.
Some of his information I have heard before, in other books, but this is by far the easiest way I have found to simplify the science so that I can reach my goal weight (I need to drop a total of 30 lbs. I am 1/3 of the way there.)
I’d gladly give up 3 weeks so that I can drop this weight and transform my body for life.

I have to say that this is the best cookbook as far as using whole foods and grains. I started on this eating program 3 weeks ago and have already lost 11 lbs. It can get time consuming cooking all your food from scratch but I have to say that I feel like I am eating like a queen. Fast food joints and quick food can not compare to the receipes in this book. It’s like eating at a gourmet restaurant all the time. I feel so much better, less pain from fibromyalgia and much more energy. Truly amazing.

If you are looking for a diet book, this book isn’t for you. If, however, you want to change the way you eat, feel better, and keep the weight off that you lose then buy this book.
The first section of the book explains why preservatives and artificial food additives are bad and why eating freshly made foods can increase the metabolism. The second section is divided into two phases of recipes; the first being a month-long detoxification phase to clear out preservatives and artificial substances out of the body, and the second phase is a more broad set of recipes that is less restrictive on what you can eat.
If you do plan to try this book, you need to be prepared to:
1) Be able to follow recipes and cook for yourself or have some one to do so for you. No fast food or frozen dinners.
2) Have time to cook. While some of the recipes are quick, others take quite a bit of time. I can make grilled chicken in about 15 minutes, but making soup can take nearly an hour. (I double or triple recipes and keep left-overs for time-consuming recipes.)
3) Buy kitchen utensils and appliances. The book lists useful ones. I haven’t bought the full list, but the ones I have do really help make things easier.
Now you must be asking yourself, “If I get this book, will it really work?” In my case, I have been seriously overweight for most of my life. I have tried other diets, but none seemed to work. At my last weigh-in at my doctor’s office before getting this book I was 344 lbs and wearing a size 50 jeans. After 5 months using these recipes I returned and weighed in at 279 lbs wearing a size 44 jeans (That is 65 lbs in 5 months).
Try it, stick with it, and it will work for you. The food tastes great due to the spices, so I never have a problem wanting something I shouldn’t have. I really recommend this book to anyone who needs to take off the weight and keep it off naturally.

I thought I should update this since it has been one year now since I bought this book. I am currently down to 234 pounds and a size 40 (meaning I have lost 110 pounds and 10 inches in the past year since I bought this book). Over the course of the year I have branched off from using the recipes alone, but I have always following the guidelines found in the first section. I still recommend this book and have done so for many of my friends and coworkers when they ask me what I did to lose weight.

I can’t get enough of Dr. Hyman. I loved Ultraprevention, Ultrametabolism and now the Five Forces of Wellness. I tried the elimination diet he recommends and feel fantastic.
I dicovered I have a problem with digesting gluten. I feel so much better after elminating gluten from my diet. My kids are now gluten-free and are doing better in so many ways. I believe gluten should not be allowed in our food supply.
After listening to Dr. Hyman, I discovered my Thyroid levels were actually undesirable. The lab was using old information so my physician assumed my thyroid was fine. The ideal range for your TSH is between 1 & 2. Celiac Disease ( a gluten intolerance) can lead to thyroid problems. If I had eliminated gluten sooner, I probably wouldn’t have a thyroid problem now.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first round of listening to this very informative and educational lecture series and I’m still learning more every time I repeat the series. It is a wealth of information and Dr. Hyman spells things out in both medical and layman terms, providing plenty of real life examples to give the information perspective. This is a series that anyone with an open mind and desire to improve their health will benefit from.

When I first received “Detox in a Box” I was disappointed because the program is based on a plan that requires the procurement of over 0 worth of supplements. However, after listening to the introduction CD I decided that .00 to .00 per day was a worthwhile investment if it meant saying good-bye to my miserable state of mind. I originally intended to do the 7-day program, but found that it was so easy to follow and I felt so great that I followed the plan for 21 days. I lost over 15 pounds and feel terrific. As a result of this program, I have made major adjustments to my diet. This is not a “quick start” program; after you receive the materials at least a week of preparation is required – Keep in mind that it is well worth it! I even had to get a blender (our other one bit the dust a few years ago) but it is a good thing I did because since the detox I have kept up with the morning shake several times a week. On the detox the hardest part, but doable, was getting down the Bentonite Clay and the Psyllium. I did the program pretty close to prescribed and have since kept up with eating more Brown Rice, Fish, Veggies and with drinking more water and Herbal Teas.
I think giving up that morning coffee was really helpful for me both with controlling my evening sugar cravings and improving my joint pain. Lost about 10 lbs so far and plan on losing more – really feeling more energy and joy.

Knowledge about feline diabetes is important in order to take special care of your cat. Diabetes is a serious ailment which touches millions of humans, but your cat can also be impacted by it. Cat care and diabetes control go hand in hand to ensure your cat can live an otherwise normal life.
There are two types of feline diabetes that might impact your pet: type 1 is induced by an insufficient production of insulin, and type 2 when the body cannot adequately process the insulin produced. I find it amazing that of the reviewers that say they have diabetes- every single one said this program lowered their blood sugars and it works. Yet, people give the program a lukewarm review because it is too hard, or there aren’t enough recipes, nor an exact diet given. Do you want a program that will help you cure your diabetes or not? This program gets you perfect blood sugar.
I am also a fan of Dr Richard Berenstein’s Diabetes Solution. Berenstein says eat enough meat to feel satisfied. I see a lot of overlap between what these doctors are saying- yet one is a vegan rabbi and the other is an advocate of meat eating. That should tell you something. (Eat tons of vegetables, avoid most fruits and starches. Coffee is bad. You need to exercise to control blood sugar and build muscle. All those fake sugars are very bad. Berenstein says most of them don’t work to control blood sugar, and Cousins sees them as toxic. )
But Dr Cousins program also brings in a spiritual dimension. You will be physically healthier if you don’t eat meat, but especially you will be doing the ethical thing.
The raw foodists might hate my bringing in Berenstein because they believe that cooking food itself is bad (and Cousins gives a lot of research to that effect.) (And most raw foodists are vegan.) But both of these doctors will tell you that as a diabetic you cannot consume the starches, sweet fruits, sugar-free drinks and candies, coffee, etc that the American Diabetes Association recommends. Both will tell you there is big business profiteering on your diabetes. Both will tell you the standard medical approaches to diabetes care usually do more hard than good.
OK- the program is hard. Follow it only if you want to live a long healthy life.
As for not giving a specific program: he gives you formulas and patterns because then you can create endless menus and variety in your meals. He tells you which foods to eat, and which to avoid. He tells you how to juice-feast, four ways to get more greens, how to make green soups, how to make crackers and pates and wraps. He gives some recipes. There are tons of recipes online once you have these guidelines.
And- if your friends think this diet is too “extreme” then please consider that you deserve more support from the people you love. (My friends and family have given me complete support.)
This book is NOT an ad for his workshops. There are about 450 pages and only 10 describing the workshops. Those ten pages explain something that I think is very true- to live on a raw vegan diet, you need to learn about more than just food. (Honestly, to commit to curing your diabetes through any diet, one would probably need to learn about a lot more than food. It is a spiritual journey.)

I received this book about 6 weeks ago and have been following the suggestions by Dr. Cousens. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 6 years ago with an A1c of almost 14. I tried vegetarian diets, all the way to Atkins, with little success. I was taking 30u of Novolog and 40-50u of Lantus daily. At my previous doctor’s visit my A1c was 8.4 (with my lowest ever at 7.4) and my cholesteral was 324! I tried Lipitor but gave it up because of how it made me feel. Now, I’m shooting about 10u of Novolog and 20-25 of Lantus daily. I just returned from my appointment today and my A1c is 6.8! And my cholesteral is 164!!! I am a believer! I am probably only 90% raw and I still do put a little feta/parmesan in my salads, but I am so committed to this new way of being! I also do not use soy products, wheat or breads… My new goals are to have an A1c

I found this in the International Herald Tribune, and couldn’t agree more: PARIS: This can be a bad world, full of self-interest and hard-heartedness, but every now and again something comes along that is dazzlingly generous and full of the excitement of life. Today’s “something” is a movie about a bicycle journey that three young men took across the United States to raise money for two causes – the American Diabetes Association and the Kupenda foundation for disabled children in Kenya.

I bought this movie as a lover of biking, but wasn’t at all sure what to expect. Turned out to be a wonderful movie… much more than a great biking adventure (which it is too!). Highly likable guys, funny, touching, self-effacing, competitive and inspirational. It’s the sort of movie that should appeal to the best in all of us.
